Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend and reenact R.S. 15:828(E), relative to diminution of sentence; to provide relative to diminution of sentence for the earning of an associate's degree; and to provide for related matters.

AI Summary

This bill amends existing Louisiana law, specifically R.S. 15:828(E), to expand the eligibility for earning additional sentence reduction credits for incarcerated individuals. Previously, only those who earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited and department-approved institution could receive an extra ninety days of credit towards their projected good time parole supervision date. Now, this bill allows individuals who earn an associate's degree, in addition to a bachelor's degree, from such an institution while incarcerated to also be eligible for this additional ninety-day sentence reduction. This provision aims to incentivize and reward inmates for pursuing higher education during their incarceration.
