Bill Summary

This bill provides that the maximum total amount of unemployment benefits payable to an eligible individual during a benefit year shall not exceed 26 times the individual’s weekly benefit amount, rather than 16 times the weekly benefit amount as provided under current law. The bill also provides that the maximum total amount of unemployment benefits payable during a benefit year to an eligible individual laid off due to the individual’s employer going out of business at the factory, establishment, or other premises at which the individual was last employed shall not exceed 39 times the individual’s weekly benefit amount, rather than 26 times the weekly benefit amount as provided under current law.

AI Summary

This bill increases the maximum amount of unemployment benefits an eligible individual can receive within a "benefit year," which is the 12-month period for which unemployment benefits are calculated. Specifically, it raises the general maximum from 16 times an individual's "weekly benefit amount" (the amount of money an individual receives each week they are unemployed and eligible) to 26 times that amount. For individuals who lose their jobs because their employer's factory or business closes down, the maximum benefit duration is further extended from 26 times the weekly benefit amount to 39 times the weekly benefit amount.
