This bill, titled the "Solid waste: Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act," makes a minor adjustment to the reporting schedule for the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) regarding its progress in implementing the act. The act itself, which covers certain single-use packaging and plastic single-use food service ware, requires producers of these materials to reduce and recycle them, and to ensure that by January 1, 2032, all covered materials sold or distributed in California are recyclable or compostable. Producers must also participate in an approved producer responsibility organization (PRO) plan, which outlines how they will manage source reduction, collection, processing, and recycling of covered materials. The original law mandated that CalRecycle report its progress to the Legislature by January 1 of each odd-numbered year; this bill simply changes that reporting deadline to January 2 of each odd-numbered year.
