This bill requires the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to actively notify registered and legal owners, as well as anyone known to have an interest in a vehicle, within 14 days of receiving any remaining funds from a vehicle lien sale. A lien sale occurs when a lienholder, such as a mechanic or storage facility, sells a vehicle to recover unpaid costs. Previously, any balance after the lienholder was paid was sent to the DMV, and individuals had to proactively file a claim to get their portion of these funds. This bill aims to improve transparency and ensure that owners are aware of their right to claim any surplus money from the sale of their vehicle.
