This bill increases the fees for filing certain legal documents and for issuing writs of execution, which are court orders used to enforce judgments, in Rhode Island's district court, superior court, and family court. Specifically, the fee for entering a small claim in district court will rise from $55 to $75, and the fee for entering any other action will increase from $80 to $100, with a portion of these fees, now $20 instead of $5, going to Rhode Island Legal Services, an organization that provides legal aid. The fee for a writ of execution in district court will double from $20 to $40. In superior court, the fee for entering a civil action or petition will go up from $160 to $180, and the fee for a writ of execution will increase from $50 to $70, with $20 of the filing fee now directed to Rhode Island Legal Services, an increase from $10. The family court will see a fee increase for entering a petition, complaint, or action from $120 to $130, and the fee for a writ of execution will rise from $40 to $50, with $20 of the filing fee now allocated to Rhode Island Legal Services, up from $10. In all these courts, a technology surcharge will also be applied as previously established. This bill will become effective immediately upon its passage.
