Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Article 1 of Chapter 1A of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions relative to the Department of Early Care and Learning, so as to require child care learning centers to carry certain amounts of liability insurance coverage and to provide proof of such coverage; to provide for penalties; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill requires child care learning centers in Georgia to carry a minimum of $50,000 in liability insurance coverage per person and $1 million per occurrence, purchased from an authorized insurer, and to provide proof of this coverage to the Department of Early Care and Learning, their clients, and have it available at their location. The Department of Early Care and Learning, which oversees licensed early care and education programs, previously only recommended liability insurance, but this bill now mandates it. Failure to comply with these new insurance requirements will result in a civil fine of $1,000 for each day a center operates without coverage, and previously, penalties for not following notification procedures regarding lack of insurance were a fine of up to $1,000 per infraction.
