Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Article 3 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to local boards of education, so as to provide for the awarding of high school diplomas to high school students who are at the end of life; to provide for waivers; to provide for posthumous awarding of such diplomas; to provide for policies, rules, and regulations; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill allows local boards of education in Georgia to award a high school diploma to students who are enrolled in a high school program and have a terminal medical diagnosis and are receiving end-of-life care. To initiate this, a parent or guardian must submit a written request to the local school superintendent, including documentation from the student's medical provider confirming their end-of-life health status. The local board of education then has 14 days to ask the State Board of Education to waive the usual graduation credit requirements for that student. Once the State Board of Education approves this waiver, the local board will award the diploma. The bill also specifies that diplomas can be awarded posthumously if it's not possible to present it before the student's passing, and the State Board of Education will create necessary policies to ensure this process is followed promptly.
