Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Article 3 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to local boards of education, so as to provide for the awarding of high school diplomas to high school students who are at the end of life; to provide for waivers; to provide for posthumous awarding of such diplomas; to provide for policies, rules, and regulations; to provide for a short title; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill, known as the "Gakobe Milton Act," allows local school boards in Georgia to award a high school diploma to a student who is enrolled in a high school program and has a terminal medical diagnosis requiring end-of-life care. To initiate this process, a parent or guardian must submit a written request to the local school superintendent, along with documentation from the student's medical provider confirming their end-of-life status. The local school board then has 14 days to ask the State Board of Education to waive the usual requirements for graduation credits. If the State Board approves this waiver, the local board will award the diploma, and it can be given to the student before they pass away or awarded posthumously if that is not possible. The State Board of Education is responsible for creating any necessary policies or rules to ensure this process is followed promptly.
