This bill establishes the "Motivational Boot Camp Incarceration Program" within the department of corrections, creating a two-year program for eligible inmates aged seventeen to twenty-one who have prior nonviolent criminal offenses and are convicted of a third nonviolent offense that is not a Class A or B felony. This program, designed to be rigorous with a strong emphasis on work, physical activity, and discipline, also includes intensive counseling and treatment to address criminal behavior and instill self-discipline. Individuals sentenced to this program must be medically cleared and physically and mentally capable of strenuous activity, and their participation is subject to provisional approval by the department of corrections. Upon successful completion of the program, the offense may be expunged from the individual's criminal record; however, failure to complete the program will result in the imposition of the original jail or prison sentence. The program is set to sunset six years after its effective date unless reauthorized by the general assembly.
