This bill amends West Virginia law to exclude absences for participation in Future Farmers of America (FFA)-sanctioned activities from the 10-day limit for excused absences. Currently, this 10-day limit applies to a combination of absences for medical or dental appointments, personal illness or injury, death in the family, school-approved activities, college visits, and participation in certain student organizations. The bill specifically adds FFA activities, along with other West Virginia Department of Education-recognized and -sanctioned student organizations like 4-H, SkillsUSA, Future Business Leaders of America, Health Occupations Students of America, and the Common Ground Partnership, to the list of excused absences that do not count towards this 10-day limit. Students participating in these activities will be marked as present, provided they submit documentation and make up any missed schoolwork without negatively impacting their grades. This change aims to encourage student involvement in these enrichment programs without penalizing their attendance record.
