This bill authorizes any municipality within Escambia County, Alabama, to enter into agreements with the Escambia County Sheriff to provide police services within the municipality's limits and police jurisdiction, meaning the areas the municipality has authority over. These contracts would allow the sheriff and their deputies to enforce all laws, including local ordinances, and make arrests or issue citations as if they were municipal police officers. Municipalities would be required to pay the county a sum sufficient to cover the necessary personnel and equipment for these services, as agreed upon by the municipality, the sheriff, and the county commission. The county commission would then use these funds to provide police services within the municipality. Any such contract must be approved by both the sheriff and the county commission, and the sheriff and deputies would retain their legal and constitutional protections while performing these contracted duties. Additionally, the Escambia County Commission may provide a supplemental salary to the sheriff for these additional responsibilities, paid by the county and separate from the sheriff's regular salary, which would cease if the agreement is terminated. This bill is set to become effective on June 1, 2026.
