This joint resolution appropriates $500,000 to Onward We Learn to support the Rhode Island GEAR UP program, which aims to help students from Rhode Island access and succeed in higher education. GEAR UP stands for "Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs," a federal initiative designed to increase college readiness and enrollment. Onward We Learn partners with the Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner, the recipient of the federal GEAR UP grant, to deliver programs that focus on academic enrichment, social-emotional development, career education, and post-secondary preparation, including scholarships of up to $4,500 per year for four years for eligible students. This appropriation is intended to help meet the federal grant's requirement for a state match and to continue supporting Onward We Learn's mission, which research indicates significantly increases students' likelihood of earning a college degree.
