This bill directs the Commissioner of Education, in collaboration with the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, to create a model curriculum focused on fire science for public high schools and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) across the state. This curriculum is intended to be a two-year, credit-bearing career and technical education elective, starting in a student's junior year, and will incorporate learning standards developed by the Commissioner and the fire prevention office. Crucially, the curriculum will include hands-on training designed to prepare students for both the basic exterior firefighting operations certificate and the interior firefighting operations certificate, as recognized by the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, with successful completion of the first year leading to the basic certificate and the second year leading to the interior certificate, provided students are at least sixteen years old. The Commissioner will also provide implementation guidance, technical assistance, and help establish partnerships between high schools and regional fire departments or other approved entities to deliver the hands-on components of the training, ensuring that the curriculum meets the necessary standards for students to earn these firefighting certifications.
