This bill establishes a two-year pilot program within the department of elementary and secondary education, referred to as the "department," to coordinate a national cultural exchange program for students. This program, intended to begin in the 2027-2028 school year, will allow twelfth-grade students to stay with host families in another state for a week to explore similarities and differences in political, socioeconomic, and cultural aspects of their home and host locations. The department will aim for diverse participation from various schools and districts and may award grants to encourage student involvement. A dedicated "cultural exchange program fund" will be established to support the program, receiving funds from various sources including legislative appropriations and private donations, and will be managed by the state treasurer. The department will report on the program's progress to legislative committees by September 1, 2029, and the program's provisions will expire on August 1, 2029, unless extended by the general assembly. This act will become effective upon passage.
