This bill, by making the provisions of the Trial Court Interpreter Employment and Labor Relations Act applicable to sign language interpreters, would extend the existing procedures governing the employment and compensation of certified and registered trial court interpreters and court interpreters pro tempore to those who interpret in sign language during court proceedings. The Trial Court Interpreter Employment and Labor Relations Act, often referred to as "the act," establishes rules for how these interpreters are hired, paid, and generally treated as employees of the courts, and this change means that sign language interpreters will now be covered by these same regulations, which previously did not apply to them.
