This bill mandates the inclusion of an obesity treatment and management program within the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, requiring it to be developed in consultation with the Secretary of Health and promote evidence-based, intensive, multicomponent behavioral and lifestyle interventions for individuals diagnosed with obesity, diabetes, or other obesity-related conditions, including structured behavioral change sessions to prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes, coverage for FDA-approved weight management medications, and metabolic and bariatric surgery, with services available in various settings to ensure access. Furthermore, the bill requires insurers, nonprofit health service plans, and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) to provide coverage for such obesity treatment and management programs for individuals diagnosed with these conditions, with these provisions taking effect on January 1, 2027, for policies and plans issued, delivered, or renewed on or after that date.
