This resolution, passed by the Virginia General Assembly, celebrates the life and profound contributions of Gladys Mae West, a pioneering mathematician and scientist who passed away on January 17, 2026. West, a native of Dinwiddie County, overcame significant prejudice and discrimination to become a key figure in the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Her work in satellite geodesy, which involved calculating the precise shape of the Earth by analyzing satellite data and accounting for gravitational and tidal forces, provided the foundational mathematical models that are still essential for every GPS-enabled device today. Despite her groundbreaking achievements, many of her contributions went unrecognized for years until her legacy was championed by others. West continued her education throughout her career, earning multiple advanced degrees, and was eventually inducted into the United States Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame and received the Prince Philip Medal. The resolution expresses the General Assembly's deep sadness at her loss and directs that a copy be presented to her family as a token of respect for her memory and her immense impact on science, national security, commerce, and daily life worldwide.
