This bill would allow any group of residents to apply to the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for "identified cohesive fire community" status, which is defined as a community where at least 50% of homes have been certified as "home hardened" (meaning they've been made more resistant to wildfire) by a program approved by the State Fire Marshal by June 1, 2027. Starting in the 2028-29 fiscal year, the department could then allocate up to 20% of the funds from its Wildfire Prevention Grants Program to these identified communities. These funds could be used for activities like reducing hazardous fuels (dry vegetation that can easily burn), planning for wildfire prevention, and educating residents about wildfire prevention. This initiative aims to provide targeted support to communities that have demonstrated a commitment to wildfire preparedness.
