This bill modifies existing Minnesota law regarding firearms on school property by expanding the definition of "school property" to include facilities hosting events sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, provided proper signage is posted, and establishes uniform storage requirements for firearms when individuals authorized to carry them are no longer in an eligible on-duty status or participating in an authorized activity. Specifically, any firearm carried by an authorized individual must be unloaded, stored in a locked container, safe, or secure device that requires a key, combination, or code to open and is resistant to tampering, and then placed in a locked trunk of a vehicle or, if no trunk is available, out of plain sight within the vehicle. This aims to enhance public safety by clarifying when firearms are permitted on school grounds and ensuring they are stored securely when not in active use by authorized personnel.
