This joint resolution reconstitutes the Booker T. Washington Commemorative Commission, which was originally established by the Senate to honor Booker T. Washington with a statue in the Old Senate Chamber, into a joint commission with members from both the Senate and the House of Delegates. The commission's responsibilities are also expanded to include studying and recommending an appropriate statue and its location on Capitol Square, which is the central public space in Richmond, Virginia, where government buildings are located. The commission will consist of four members from the Senate Committee on Rules, four from the House Committee on Rules, the Chairs of both Rules committees, the Speakers of both legislative bodies, and the Clerks of both the Senate and the House of Delegates. The commission is tasked with reporting its progress and recommendations annually to the General Assembly, with the first report due by December 1, 2026.
