This bill, if approved by voters, will grant Hall County residents a homestead exemption of $10,000 on the assessed value of their primary residence for county purposes, meaning it will reduce the amount of property tax owed to the county by $10,000 of the home's value. This exemption applies to "ad valorem taxes for county purposes," which are all property taxes levied by Hall County, including those for bonded debt, but it specifically excludes state taxes, school taxes, and municipal taxes. To receive this exemption, residents must file an application with the Hall County tax commissioner, though those already receiving the statewide homestead exemption by December 31, 2026, will be automatically eligible. The exemption will automatically renew each year as long as the person continues to live in the home as their homestead, and they are responsible for notifying the tax commissioner if they become ineligible. This exemption is in addition to any other homestead exemptions already available for county purposes and will take effect for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2027, provided it is approved by a two-thirds vote in the Georgia General Assembly and then by a majority of Hall County voters in a referendum election scheduled for November 2026.
