This bill shifts the responsibility for developing and providing suicide prevention training for school staff, parents, and pupils from the State Department of Education to the Behavioral Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, which will create a free, online, evidence-based, trauma-informed, and culturally competent program accessible statewide for educational entities serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Additionally, any local educational agency, which includes county offices of education, school districts, state special schools, and charter schools, that conducts suicide risk screenings will be required to report de-identified, aggregate data on these screenings to the State Department of Education on at least an annual basis, including details on the number of screenings, pupil demographics, identified risk levels, and membership in high-risk groups, which the department will then compile and publish online to inform policy and program development.
