This bill, titled the "Secure Firearm Storage and Suicide Prevention Act of 2026," amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to address firearm safety and suicide prevention. It mandates that the Secretary of Education, in consultation with various federal agencies, law enforcement, and experts, develop best practices for secure firearm storage and preventing firearm-related suicides or unintentional injuries. These best practices will cover how to store firearms securely, evaluate safety protocols, understand the risks of unsecured firearms, strategies for prevention, how students should react to unsecured firearms, resources for acquiring secure storage devices, and summaries of federal and state firearm safety laws. Crucially, these materials must remain neutral on firearm possession. Following the development of these best practices, local educational agencies (LEAs) that receive specific federal funding, referred to as "covered local educational agencies," will be required to develop their own local guidance incorporating these best practices, tailored to their communities, and including information on mental health resources. This local guidance must then be distributed annually to students, parents, school staff, and other community members via email and physical means, such as handouts or mail, to promote firearm safety and reduce related deaths.
