This bill mandates that the state provide uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to employees of the Department of Transportation, effective October 1, 2026, with the actual provision of this coverage to be in place by July 1, 2027. This coverage will be part of the State Fleet Insurance Policy and will offer a minimum of one million dollars for bodily injury or death. The purpose of this insurance is to protect Department of Transportation employees who are legally entitled to compensation for damages resulting from accidents caused by drivers who are either uninsured (meaning they have no car insurance) or underinsured (meaning their insurance coverage is not enough to cover the full extent of the damages) when these employees are working outside of a vehicle and are injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident.
