This bill increases the number of judges in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit, which is a court system responsible for handling serious legal cases in Atlanta, from twenty to twenty-one. The Governor will appoint the first new judge, whose term will begin on January 1, 2027, and end on December 31, 2028. After this initial appointment, successors will be elected by voters every four years, starting in the 2028 general election, to serve four-year terms. This new judge will have the same powers and responsibilities as the existing judges and will be compensated similarly, including any local salary supplements. The bill also clarifies that it does not change existing local laws specific to the Atlanta Judicial Circuit and will become effective for appointment purposes upon approval and for all other purposes on January 1, 2027.
