This bill makes a nonsubstantive change to the Public Employees’ Retirement Law (PERL), which governs the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). PERS provides retirement benefits to public employees based on factors like age, service credit, and final salary. The existing law specifies how time off, such as sabbatical leave, where an employee receives less than full pay, is credited as service for retirement purposes. This bill simply updates the language to be gender-neutral, changing "his or her" to "their" and "he or she" to "they" throughout the relevant section of the Government Code, without altering the substance of how service credit is calculated or granted.
