This bill expands eligibility for school safety grants, which are funds provided to schools to enhance their physical security and cybersecurity measures, to include nonpublic schools (private schools not operated by a school district) and Tribal contract schools (schools operated by a federally recognized Indian tribe under contract with the state). Previously, these grants were only available to school districts and charter schools. The bill also appropriates money for these grants and amends existing law to allow for the reopening of grant applications and adjustments to awards if funds from the 2024 appropriation have not yet been distributed. Additionally, it clarifies that funds can be used for security improvements, cybersecurity insurance, and associated costs, with a portion set aside for grant administration. The appropriation is a one-time fund available until June 30, 2029, an extension from the original expiration date.
