This bill requires that when a peace officer, which refers to law enforcement officers, accidentally discharges their firearm while on duty, or if the discharge is due to the officer's negligence, specific details must be reported. Currently, any firearm discharge by a peace officer, except for training or to euthanize a suffering animal, must be reported to the commissioner of public safety within 30 days by the officer's department head, who then forwards a copy to the Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, and the commissioner also reports summary information to the legislature biennially. This amendment adds that in cases of accidental or negligent discharge, the report must also include the make, model, and caliber of the firearm, along with information about any accessories attached to it, specifying whether these accessories were factory-installed or added later.
