This bill modifies the eligibility requirements for burial in state veterans cemeteries by expanding the categories of individuals who can be interred. Previously, cemeteries were for service members who died on active duty, eligible veterans, and their families, as defined by federal law (United States Code, title 38, section 2402, paragraph (a), subparagraphs 1 to 5 and 7). This bill adds honorably discharged members of the National Guard or other reserve components, along with their spouses and dependent children, to this list. Additionally, the bill clarifies that burial fees may be charged for the interment of these newly eligible National Guard and reserve component members, and their spouses and dependent children, though the commissioner of veterans affairs can waive or reduce these fees for indigent individuals, while continuing to exempt active duty service members and eligible veterans from such charges.
