This bill establishes an optional twenty-five year retirement plan for certain airport firefighters employed by a county or municipality, allowing them to retire after completing twenty-five years of creditable service, which includes service as an airport firefighter or similar roles responsible for aircraft rescue and firefighting, as well as certain other public safety roles like state police, paid firefighters, and police officers. This new retirement option, which provides a retirement allowance equal to one-half of the member's final average salary (FAS) plus an additional benefit for service beyond twenty-five years, up to three-fourths of FAS, is contingent upon the employer electing to offer it and requires the employer to bear the associated costs, including past service costs. The bill also clarifies that these airport firefighters can retire without regard to age and makes conforming amendments to existing retirement and social security laws to include them in provisions that allow for early retirement based on years of service.
