This bill amends existing law to exempt medical alert devices and services from New Jersey's sales and use tax, making them more affordable and accessible, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly. A "medical alert device" is defined as an electronic tool that allows a subscriber, someone who pays for a medical alert service, to signal or communicate with an "assistance operator," who is a person authorized to contact emergency responders or others on the subscriber's behalf. A "medical alert service" is the overall offering that includes the device and access to this assistance operator. This exemption is added to a list of other medical-related items already exempt from sales tax, such as prescription drugs and durable medical equipment. The change will take effect on the first day of the second month after the bill is enacted.
