This bill requires the California Department of Transportation (Department) to take additional steps to prevent suicides on state bridges and overpasses. Currently, by July 1, 2028, the Department must consider suicide prevention when updating its guidance documents, working with the State Department of Public Health and local governments. This bill expands that requirement by mandating that the Department not only incorporate suicide deterrent considerations into its guidance but also develop and maintain a list of pre-approved designs for suicide prevention barriers that local governments can readily use. These considerations for deterrents include evaluating and adopting guidance for measures like barriers and fencing to discourage suicide attempts on bridges and overpasses within the state highway system.
