This bill allows each elected constable of a justice of the peace court in St. Tammany Parish to appoint one deputy constable if needed, for whom the constable will be responsible. Before starting their duties, these deputies must take a constitutional oath of office, meet specific training and qualification requirements similar to those for constables, and a copy of their oath must be filed with the attorney general within 72 hours. While deputies are not entitled to compensation from any local government or the state, the constable can set their pay and cover expenses, including bond premiums and insurance, using fees generated by their office, and can issue payment monthly or twice a month. Importantly, a deputy constable does not need to live in the same ward as the constable who appointed them, but they must be a resident of St. Tammany Parish, and this new provision does not affect a justice of the peace's ability to appoint special deputy constables under existing law.
