This bill authorizes the creation and issuance of special license plates for recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross, a high military honor awarded for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. The plates, which will feature an emblem designed in consultation with the commissioner of veterans affairs and include the words "DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS," can be obtained by qualified individuals who own specific types of vehicles, including passenger cars, pickup trucks, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles, and who pay the standard registration tax. Importantly, these special plates will be issued free of charge to eligible applicants, and replacements for damaged plates will also be free. Furthermore, the plates can be transferred to another qualifying vehicle owned by the same individual without an additional fee. This provision, which amends Minnesota Statutes, chapter 168, will take effect on January 1, 2027.
