Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend and reenact R.S. 45:201.9, relative to proof of insurance by transportation network company drivers; to provide that a transportation network company driver shall provide proof of insurance coverage in the event of an accident; to provide that a transportation network company driver shall disclose whether he was logged on to the transportation network company's digital network or on a prearranged ride at the time of an accident; to provide for penalties; and to provide for related matters.

AI Summary

This bill requires transportation network company (TNC) drivers, such as those working for Uber or Lyft, to carry proof of their insurance coverage at all times while using their vehicle for TNC services. In the event of an accident, these drivers must provide their insurance information to the parties involved, their insurers, and any responding police officers. Additionally, TNC drivers will be obligated to disclose whether they were actively logged into the TNC's digital network or were on a prearranged ride at the time of the accident, which is crucial for determining which insurance policy applies. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in penalties as outlined in R.S. 32:863.1, a section of law that deals with proof of financial responsibility for vehicle owners.
