This bill makes a minor, nonsubstantive change to existing law regarding the collection and deposit of a surcharge on natural gas consumption. The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) currently has the authority to regulate public utilities, including gas companies, and is required to establish a surcharge to fund programs for low-income assistance, energy efficiency, and public interest research and development. This bill specifically amends Section 892 of the Public Utilities Code to change the wording from "in the Gas Consumption Surcharge Fund" to "into the Gas Consumption Surcharge Fund," which is a fund created in the State Treasury. The State Board of Equalization collects these surcharge payments from gas corporations and consumers, transmits them to the Treasurer, who then deposits them into this fund. This change is administrative and does not alter the purpose or function of the surcharge or the fund itself.
