This bill establishes the California Excellence in Service Learning Designation Program, which will be managed by the State Department of Education to recognize schools and local educational agencies (defined as school districts, county offices of education, or charter schools) that excel in "service learning," an educational approach that combines community service with learning and reflection to achieve academic and civic goals while addressing community needs. Schools and local educational agencies will need to apply annually, meeting criteria that may include having an active status designation, appointing a staff member as a service learning contact, providing staff training, and creating a dedicated webpage with service learning information. Once designated, this recognition will be valid for three years, after which schools and agencies must reapply to renew it, and they may lose their designation if they cease to comply with the program's criteria during the three-year period.
