This bill makes a technical, nonsubstantive change to existing law regarding the statute of limitations for certain sex offenses committed against victims under 18 years of age. Specifically, it amends Section 801.1 of the Penal Code to change the wording from "any time prior to" to "before" the victim's 40th birthday for commencing prosecution of these felonies, provided the crimes occurred on or after January 1, 2015, or the previous statute of limitations had not expired as of that date. The statute of limitations, or statute of repose, is the legal deadline for initiating a prosecution after a crime has been committed.
