This bill, by adding a new section to Michigan's zoning laws, aims to limit how far structures like homes and accessory buildings must be from property lines. Specifically, in areas designated as metropolitan statistical areas (defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget) or areas bordering them, zoning ordinances generally cannot require a setback of more than 15 feet from the front property line or 5 feet from the rear or side property lines. However, these ordinances can still impose a setback of up to 25 feet from specific environmentally sensitive areas, including wetlands, inland lakes or streams, and the ordinary high water mark of the Great Lakes or Lake St. Clair.
