This bill appropriates $10 million from the State General Fund to the Department of Education for the fiscal year 2027 to cover the costs of sensory supports, rooms, or equipment for students whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan identifies a need for such accommodations to ensure their access to education. An IEP is a legal document outlining the specific educational services and supports a student with disabilities requires, while a 504 Plan provides similar accommodations for students with disabilities who may not qualify for an IEP but still need support to access education. As a condition of receiving these funds, the Department of Education must establish and enforce rules requiring public school districts to implement these sensory accommodations using best practices for facility design, supervision, and evaluation to meet individual student needs. The funds will be disbursed by the State Treasurer upon proper authorization, and the act will become effective on July 1, 2026.
