Bill Summary

This bill requires a school board to pay a full-time teacher an annual salary in each school year that is not less than the annual salary paid to a state legislator for that school year (base salary). In addition, if a teacher has worked as a teacher for at least 10 school years, the bill requires a school board to pay the teacher an annual salary that is not less than the base salary for the school year plus $15,000. Finally, if a teacher has worked as a teacher for at least 20 school years, the bill requires a school board to pay the teacher an annual salary that is not less than $100,000. For further information see the local fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

AI Summary

This bill establishes minimum annual salaries for public school teachers in Wisconsin, requiring school boards to pay full-time teachers at least the same amount as a state legislator earns annually, referred to as the "annual legislator salary." For teachers with at least 10 years of experience, their salary must be at least the annual legislator salary plus an additional $15,000. Furthermore, teachers with 20 or more years of experience are guaranteed a minimum annual salary of $100,000. These salary requirements are not subject to collective bargaining, meaning they cannot be negotiated down by teacher unions, and existing contract provisions that conflict with this bill will not prevent its implementation once they expire or are renewed.
