Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Titles 10, 29, 31, 38, and 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to commerce and trade, guardian and ward, health, military, emergency management, and veterans affairs, and state government, respectively, so as to authorize the admission of eligible nonveteran residents to a Georgia War Veterans' Home under certain circumstances; to provide for definitions; to provide limited authority to serve as an authorized representative for the purposes of completing an application for public benefits on behalf of a deceased individual and attending any hearing thereon or litigating any appeal related thereto; to provide for the termination of such authority; to provide for related matters; to provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill allows certain nonveteran residents, specifically spouses of war veterans or parents of war veterans who died in service, to be admitted to a Georgia War Veterans' Home under specific conditions, though war veterans will always have priority for admission. It also grants limited authority to agents acting under a power of attorney, health care agents, conservators, or guardians to act as an "authorized representative" to complete applications for public benefits, attend hearings, or litigate appeals on behalf of a deceased individual, even after their death, until a formal representative for the estate is appointed. This provision aims to streamline the process of securing benefits for the deceased's estate.
