This bill modifies Kentucky's teacher certification laws by reestablishing and renaming alternative teacher certification programs as "alternative routes," outlining eligibility requirements for these routes, and eliminating one specific option (Option 2). It also creates a new pathway for current professional certificate holders to expand their certifications, specifying the criteria they must meet. The bill requires the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB), a state agency responsible for teacher certification, to publish a list of academic majors, minors, and graduate degree content areas that satisfy certification requirements. Furthermore, it clarifies that current professional certificate holders can use any alternative route to expand their certification and mandates that holders of professional certificates obtained through certain alternative routes must complete specific training for their first renewal. The EPSB also retains the authority to require a passing score on a professional skills assessment for certification. Conforming amendments are made to other related statutes, and one existing law (KRS 161.049) is repealed.
