This resolution urges Governor Kathy Hochul to officially designate July 2026 as MECP2 Duplication Syndrome Awareness Month in New York State. MECP2 duplication syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder, often caused by a genetic abnormality on the X chromosome, that leads to significant health issues including severe digestive problems, frequent lung infections, and difficult-to-treat seizures, and can also be linked to autism. Despite being recognized only in 2005, research, including promising studies in mice, offers hope for future treatments, and ongoing clinical readiness and natural history studies are paving the way for human trials. The resolution acknowledges the substantial emotional toll on caregivers and highlights that individuals with this syndrome can benefit greatly from specific stimulation and therapies.
