This bill establishes the Public Schools Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Robotics Program Task Force, which will be composed of members from the Senate and House of Delegates, the State Superintendent of Schools, the Secretaries of Labor and Commerce (or their designees), three representatives from local school systems, and three representatives from nonprofit STEM and robotics organizations. The Task Force, supported by staff from the State Department of Education, will study existing STEM and robotics programs in Maryland and other states, assess the feasibility of implementing competitive STEM and robotics programs as varsity sports in every public school, and determine the necessary approaches and resources for such implementation. The Task Force is required to report its findings and recommendations to specific committees of the General Assembly by December 15, 2026. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2026, and will be repealed on June 30, 2027.
