This bill expands the list of state officials who are permitted to carry a concealed handgun, provided they are annually qualified in firearm use by the Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training, and also creates exceptions for certain officials to carry weapons within the state capitol building. Specifically, it adds designated assistants to the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture and forestry, and commissioner of insurance to the list of those allowed to carry concealed weapons. Furthermore, it allows the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture and forestry, and commissioner of insurance, along with a designated staff member for each, to carry weapons within the state capitol building, with the exception of the Senate chamber, House of Representatives chamber, and any legislative committee rooms. This legislation amends R.S. 14:95(H), which pertains to the illegal carrying of weapons, by creating these new exceptions.
