This resolution honors Dr. Bernal Baca for his extensive service and dedication to the people of Washington state. Dr. Baca, who had deep roots in Trinidad, Colorado, and pursued higher education at several universities, was a respected teacher, organizer, and community builder known for his work on justice, education, and labor issues. He played a crucial role in establishing the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs, serving in various leadership capacities on the commission, including as Chair. Dr. Baca also dedicated 30 years to teaching at Yakima Valley College and held leadership positions within the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), including serving as President of AFT-Yakima and as the Government Relations Specialist for AFT-Washington. After retiring from his academic and union careers, he embarked on a third career as the Executive Director of a Tacoma-based nonprofit serving the Latino community. His commitment extended to numerous other organizations, including the Tacoma Art Museum, the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the Washington State Board of Education, and the Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development, all focused on equity and community betterment. The resolution also notes his passion as a lifelong Denver Broncos fan. Finally, it directs that a copy of this resolution be sent to Dr. Baca's family.
