Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend and reenact R.S. 37:2651(11)(a) and enact R.S. 37:2651(11)(e) and (f), relative to the definitions relevant to speech language pathology and audiology; to provide for definitions; to provide for guidelines for the practice of audiology; and to provide for related matters.

AI Summary

This bill clarifies the scope of practice for audiologists in Louisiana by amending existing definitions and adding new ones. Specifically, it expands the definition of the "practice of audiology" to include services for disorders of the vestibular system (related to balance) without requiring a physician's referral. It also explicitly permits audiologists to order and perform certain diagnostic tests, such as cultures, blood work, and non-radiographic imaging, solely related to auditory or vestibular conditions, and to order radiographic imaging for these conditions. However, the bill also clearly prohibits audiologists from performing surgery, including osseointegrated device surgery and cochlear implant surgery, and from interpreting cultures, blood work, or radiographic imaging for the purpose of diagnosing or treating patients.
