This bill amends existing Minnesota law to allow for limited disciplinary dismissals for students in kindergarten through grade 3, which were previously prohibited. Specifically, a student in these grades can now be dismissed for a maximum of one partial day and one full day immediately following a disciplinary incident, solely for the purpose of allowing the school to communicate with the student's parent or guardian about the incident and to facilitate the student's return to school. This change, which takes effect for the 2026-2027 school year, still maintains that expulsions and exclusions can only be used as a last resort after other resources have been utilized and only when there is a serious and ongoing safety threat to the student or others.
