This bill revises provisions related to physician assistants (PAs) in Idaho by amending existing laws. Specifically, it clarifies the practice of PAs by allowing them to practice within their education, training, and experience, and within the community standard of care, with the degree and nature of collaboration determined by their practice setting and outlined in facility bylaws or a written collaborative practice agreement. The bill also removes a restriction that previously prevented PAs or groups of PAs from independently owning a medical practice, provided they have a collaborative practice agreement with a physician and have at least two years of experience. Additionally, it broadens the scope of supervision responsibilities for licensed physicians, changing the term "interns, residents, nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists, or physician assistants" to the more general "health professionals who require supervision." Finally, it removes a specific limitation on supervision requirements for "bridge year physicians," who are individuals who have graduated from medical school but were not accepted into a residency program, allowing the board to set their supervision terms without being bound by PA supervision standards. The bill also declares an emergency and sets an effective date of July 1, 2026.
