Bill Summary

This act would add school superintendents, central office officials, school principals, and all other school employees, to the definition of a “public official” for purposes of the criminal prohibition against making threats to public officials. In the case of an alleged threat against these persons, a suspect would be charged only if the suspect is eighteen (18) years of age or older and is not a student at the school. No student enrolled or matriculating at the school would be charged under the provisions of this act. This act would take effect upon passage.

AI Summary

This bill expands the definition of a "public official" to include school superintendents, central office officials, school principals, and all other school employees, meaning that making threats against these individuals will now fall under the existing criminal prohibition against threatening public officials. However, the bill specifies that a suspect can only be charged with making such a threat if they are at least eighteen years old and are not currently a student at the school where the threat is made; enrolled students will not be charged under this new provision. This act will become law immediately upon its passage.
